Like most of the world, VEDA is unable to hold the in-person Summer Membership Meeting as planned in Winchester, Virginia. Instead VEDA will hold the annual Summer Membership Meeting virtually via Zoom.

This online meeting will include a Panel Discussion/Case Study: Morgan Olson; Community Economic Development Award breakout sessions; and keynote speaker Ozan Varol, rocket scientist, award-winning law professor, and bestselling author. Varol will share his presentation Think Like a Rocket Scientist: Simple Strategies you can use to Make Giant Leaps in Work and Life along with Q&A.

Two fifteen-minute breaks are built into the schedule where you can grab some lunch, check your email, or look at the virtual tour of Winchester, Virginia between each session.

We look forward to the time when we can gather in person, network for real, and partake of a standard conference chicken lunch, but we hope you will join us online on June 24th!

Patrick Barker, Executive Director, Frederick County Economic Development Authority

12:00 – 12:45 pm - Panel Discussion: Virginia Case Study: Morgan Olson
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear first-hand from the players involved in the major Morgan Olson win for Danville-Pittsylvania County. In October 2019, America’s leading manufacturer of all-aluminum walk-in step vans announced that it would invest $57.8 million to establish a new assembly operation in the former 925,000-square-foot IKEA plant, creating more than 700 new jobs. This deal was nearly lost—another Virginia location under consideration was eliminated, and just as Morgan Olson was turning its attention back to other competing states, Virginia officials learned that IKEA planned to shut down its facility, resulting in an expected loss of 300 jobs. Wheels were put in motion in record time, and the company decided the IKEA plant could be the perfect fit for its next expansion. Referred to as “a one-in-a-hundred opportunity, a real Hail Mary pass” by VEDP President and CEO Stephen Moret, the project represents a groundbreaking win for Danville-Pittsylvania County, Southern Virginia, and the Commonwealth.

12:45 – 1:00 pm - Break

1:00 – 1:45 pm - CEDA Breakout Sessions
Economic development professionals collaborate with government, the private sector, workforce development partners and countless others to make our communities competitive. The VEDA Community Economic Development Awards (CEDA) were instituted to recognize outstanding communities for their efforts in advancing economic viability through economic and community development programs. The CEDA program recognizes the best practices and exceptional contributions of communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia for Business Retention and Expansion; Business Recruitment; Community Development; and Community Involvement. The CEDA recipients for 2020 will review their award-winning projects in these VEDA Summer Membership Meeting Breakout Sessions.

1:45 – 2:00 pm - Break

2:00 – 2:45 pm - Keynote Speaker: Think Like a Rocket Scientist: Simple Strategies You can use to Make Giant Leaps in Work and Life
A former rocket scientist reveals the habits, ideas, and strategies that will empower you to turn the seemingly impossible into the possible. Rocket science is often celebrated as the ultimate triumph of technology. But it is not. Rather, it is the apex of a certain thought process -- a way to imagine the unimaginable and solve the unsolvable. It's the same thought process that enabled Neil Armstrong to take his giant leap for mankind, that allows spacecraft to travel millions of miles through outer space and land on a precise spot, and that brings us closer to colonizing other planets. Fortunately, you do not have to be a rocket scientist to think like one.

  • Speaker: Ozan Varol, Rocket Scientist, Award-Winning Law Professor, and Bestselling Author
