The Governor’s Conference on Economic Development
Increasing the Odds: Deal-Making in the New Economy
October 7-9, 2014 (Tuesday – Thursday)
Join VEDA members and guests for the 2014 Fall Conference/Governor’s Conference on Economic Development at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa/Short Pump, October 7-9, 2014. Continuing with our Building Momentum theme the Conference will focus on Increasing the Odds: Deal-Making in the New Economy.
With so many factors impacting a project’s success, this year’s Fall Conference will help communities better understand the tools and strategies that can help ‘close the deal’ in a changing economy. We’ll open the day by defining the new economy. We’ll then transition to a discussion about local strategies and partnerships that have made the difference for communities in Virginia’s capital region. The committee has added a new twist on lunch this year, which will focus on Table Topics, encouraging group conversations about a variety of timely topics. After lunch we’ll hear from a panel of consultants who will share perspectives on community elimination during site selection. We’ll conclude with an overview of two IEDC reports: More than Money: Alternative Incentives that Benefit Companies & Communities; and Measuring Success New Metrics for Economic Development Organizations.
The last day of the conference we are fortunate to have not one, but two Secretariats represented as first, Secretary of Agriculture, Todd Haymore kicks off Thursday morning, followed by Secretary of Commerce and Trade, Maurice Jones, who will ‘tee-up’ Governor Terry McAuliffe to present Virginia’s Strategic Plan for Economic Development.
Please mark your calendar and reserve your room. We look forward to seeing you in the Richmond region in October.

The Foundry Golf Club
3225 Lee's Landing Road, Powhatan, VA - 23139
Tuesday, October 7, 2014
Registration: 10 am Shotgun Start: 11 am
The Foundry Golf Club rests on one of the most naturally stunning properties in Virginia. The rolling terrain, native vegetation, and scattered rock outcroppings, combine with the meandering banks of Fine Creek to showcase the beautiful Piedmont countryside. This land was once valued by the Monacan Indians for its fertile soils and access to the James River. In the late 1980's, a group of Richmond businessmen purchased a remnant parcel of timber land on the southern side of the James River in Powhatan County. Near the same time, a constituency of golfers, including a number of these gentlemen, became interested in the establishment of a true golf club in the Greater Richmond area. There were no golf-only facilities in the region and the politics and distractions associated with the local country clubs had created a great amount of interest in this idea. J.K. Timmons, a very successful civil engineer, led the golf only initiative in searching for the right location for their retreat. The breathtaking setting of the old Foundry buildings on Fine Creek became the focus of potential for the new golf club. The Clubhouse and its natural surroundings were unlike any other course in the eastern United States. The last step was to find the best golf holes on the vast property now held by the group. With endless opportunities at every turn, Mr. Timmons went to work walking the property identifying the key land forms and ideal green locations. The vision for the new golf club was complete in late 1991. It would fully respect the outstanding natural topography on which it sat and it would speak to the much beloved golf architecture of the early 20th century. The golf experience created by Mr. Timmons and the Founders strived to combine a quality golf course with certain camaraderie between members. The course was laid out so that it could be enjoyed by foot and a caddy program was an important part of the vision.
Golf Fee includes round of golf, cart fees, box lunch and three (3) drink tickets.
