Since its creation in 1972 by the Virginia General Assembly, VHDA has helped Virginians attain quality, affordable housing through public-private partnerships with local governments, community service organizations, lenders, Realtors, developers and many others. VHDA provides mortgages for first-time homebuyers, as well as financing for apartment communities and neighborhood revitalization efforts. Virginia Tech Office of Economic Development
The Office of Economic Development connects Virginia Tech faculty, companies, and communities in ways that help create, retain, and enhance the quality of jobs and opportunities around the Commonwealth. Economic conditions in recent years have raised the level of attention nationally towards economic development and job creation. Increasingly universities are looked to for answers. Not only do we put people together to find those answers, fielding scores of inquiries from or on behalf of companies annually, but we add value to the process through our expertise in an array of topics critical to economic development.
OED develops and implements numerous projects each year, for example recently securing $10 million in federal economic and workforce development grants for western Virginia. These funds support consortiums of public and private stakeholders undertaking regional initiatives to achieve economic development and job creation goals. These initiatives include $4.8 million for workforce training in health information technology, and $1.8 million for engineering technical support for transportation equipment manufacturing firms, both new this year, as well as almost $4 million for workforce training in energy efficiency and green building construction, which is continuing from last year.
However, OED is more than just a grant-writing and project management office. The office works to integrate these activities across the discovery, learning, and engagement missions of the university. Recent activities include research conducted on adult education in Virginia for the National Governor's Association-sponsored forum Aligning Business, Education, and Workforce Development, regarding post-secondary credential attainment, teaching an applied economic development studio course in Virginia Tech's Urban Affairs and Planning program and conducted jointly at the Blacksburg and National Capital Region campuses, and; engaging community and industry leaders through staffing two key regional economic development initiatives, the Innovation Blueprint for Roanoke-Blacksburg and VT-Science and Engineering Regional Growth Enterprise (SERGE) a university-private sector collaboration based in Northern Virginia.
The diverse team that delivers all this brings unique experience and expertise in business, state, regional and local economic development, as well as educational leadership and administration.
